History of the Environmental Movements | Environmental Science | thetutee

The current environmental movements have a deep history, it has fought against the and lords, the industrialists, and the governmental and legislative bodies. It started with a bunch of people, and everyone now speaks of how to conserve the environment and the habitat of the wild animals. Following are the major events which the history has recorded and is the breakthrough towards environmental protection.


                                                       

1.      Many conservation groups started to mobilize and started active campaign in 1800s.

2.      To stop the encroachment of the industries and to protect the farming land in 1892 John Muir founded Sierra club.

3.      Many people started raising voice and the early conservationist demanded to create national parks across the country so that the environment remains protected.

4.      After both world wars the world felt that the future of this planet is in danger, the post war conditions accelerated the environmental activism. It was the time between 1950 – 1960.

5.      At the time of the J.F Kenedy’s administration in 1960 many early federal laws were passed.

6.      In 1969 Richard Nixon became the president of the America with the help of some allies, these allies then further demanded strict laws against the encroachers and the Industrialist.

7.      The Santa Barbara oil spillage in the Cleveland was a major environmental catastrophe, which educated widespread of people about the ongoing environmental crisis.

8.      In 1969 a bill was passed to assess the environmental impact in development projects, and it was made sure that there would be no harm to the environment.

9.      This law gave right to every citizen that anyone can file a lawsuit against the major environmental polluters.

10 1970 started with some major environmental movements.

11  In the years 1963 the famous book “Silent Spring “was published by Rachel Carson. He described how vulnerable the world has become due the chemicals used in these days and their impact on the soil, air and water. He strongly criticized the DDT calling it to be a major pollutant which was widely used that time. Due to the public pressure US finally banned domestic scale production of DDT.

12  In the year 1970 and 1972 two major laws were passed, first was clean air act and the second was clean water act.

13  In the year 1980 the residents of the North Carolina did a huge protest against the dump side which were made there to dump the polychlorinated biphenyl.

14  The Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and the deep-water oil spillage in 2010 were the major environmental catastrophes, it destroyed many habitat of animals.

15  In the year 2011 in Japan due to the earthquake a huge tsunami came and which caused the melt down of the Fukushima power plant which was thought to the countries safest nuclear power plant. The city was evacuated due to the high risk of the radioactive radiations.

16  The united nation environmental program was established in the year 1972.

17  Britain passed the Alkali act in the year 1863.

18  James Renald an environmentalist published a research paper which led to the establishment of the forest department.

19  In the year 1916 national park services concept was surfaced.

20  The three mile incident was a major incident happened in US due to the nuclear rector in which almost three islands were effected directly.

21  In the year 1949 united nations set a conference on the conservation of national parks and further utilize them for the habitat purposes

22  The community right to know was passed in the year 1986.

23  In 1990 oil pollution act was passed by the congress.
